Burlington/South Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
Fig. 1: Burlington/South Burlington MSA
A Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is a geographic entity defined by the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for use by federal statistical agencies. MSAs have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties. MSAs are defined in terms of whole counties, including in the six New England states.
The Burlington MSA was expanded to the Burlington/South Burlington MSA (Fig. 1) in 2003, following new 2000 MSA guidelines. It now includes all of Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties and is centered on the OMB-defined Burlington Urbanized Area. The U.S. Census Bureau, HUD, and most other agencies are gradually beginning to publish new data for the MSA as it's now defined. It's unlikely that past data releases, e.g. Census 2000, will be modified for the new MSA.
However, all previous data entries for the Burlington MSA have been renamed for the Burlington/South Burlington MSA throughout the Vermont Housing Data Web site.
The Burlington/South Burlington MSA contains the following towns/cities:
- Within Chittenden County: Bolton3, Buels Gore3, Burlington, Charlotte, Colchester, Essex, Hinesburg, Huntington3, Jericho, Milton, Richmond, Shelburne, South Burlington, St. George, Underhill3, Westford3, Williston and Winooski
